, which is used to make a variety of products such as electronics, plywood and medicine, as well as cumene, used primarily to make other chemicals, such as phenol and acetone. Severe exposure to phenol can cause liver and kidney damage, according to the Centers for Disease Control.Cumene production began at the site in 1978, when it was owned by paper-maker George-Pacific, according to
. The facility has since undergone two expansions, bringing total annual capacity to 907,000 metric tons. According the company, the facility is now the largest stand-alone cumene plant in the world."Safety is very important at the Pasadena site," the company said on its website."We are focused on sending every employee and contractor safely home to their families." As of that post, the site had"gone over 9 years without a lost time injury.
