Indya Moore has launched an independent initiative to help get direct funds to those within the trans and queer community who are in desperate need as coronavirus cases in the U.S. continue to surge.
, with a note reading: “Some of you may be asking, ‘What about me?’ I hear you.” Moore went on to explain: “In times of [crisis]…well, really…in times.. all the time…black trans women are the last of us all to receive help and resources, if any at all. It’s really important to me to prioritize those who will always be thought of as last, if thought of at all.
Below, Moore discusses why they decided to take this route and how—hopefully—the pandemic will create lasting change so that marginalized communities don’t “slip through the cracks.”I was staying with my mom in the Bronx, but I wanted to give her space and be with my partner, who is in Chicago. My mom works at the front desk of a local hospital , so I didn’t want to put her in any more risk, and I wanted to protect her immune system as much as possible.
It’s been really beautiful to see how many people have responded. I wanted it to feel genuine and not like a competition or anything, so I thought, How can I use my social credibility and my platform to create a system where we can redistribute funds to those who are most likely impacted by the pandemic? I thought Cash App was a great tool to use to redistribute funds to trans folks of color who really need it.
It’s been very overwhelming. A lot of people have responded very generously and given upwards of $1,000. But it’s been heartbreaking too. I get DMs from trans teens who are 15 or 17 asking for funds to support their moms or their families. A lot of trans people are afraid of losing housing or can’t pay their cell-phone bill, which is their only connection to their loved ones.
