A year and a half after Canada’s renewed plan for engagement with the Indo-Pacific region pledged a new mission in Fiji, it has yet to be opened, but a couple of Canadian diplomats are on the ground. In the $2.3-billion Indo-Pacific strategy released in November 2022, the federal government announced there would be an increase in diplomatic engagement in the region, which included opening its first high commission in Fiji.
McKinnon, who ran the foreign ministry’s physical resources bureau during his tenure, said the challenge is finding an office space that will receive security approval. He added that having two people currently on the ground in Fiji is a positive. “I lived my life when I was doing property stuff wishing we had quicker decision-making processes, but the reality is that there are certain things that do take a serious amount of time, particularly on the security front,” he said.
