OpEd: 'We are asking people to make the right public health choices without providing them with easy, accessible resources and information. As a result, COVID is spreading out of control and is still impacting everyone’s lives.'
. It is true that our neighbors and peers can seem callous and individualistic, but that’s what happens when we are abandoned. The federal government uses the language of individualism to justify its own inaction.
It is also true there are states that have sought to undermine mitigation efforts by banning mask and vaccine mandates, and that there will be people who won't comply. But that’s not an excuse for the federal government to not use its power to provide people with resources, issue regulations, and establish clear messaging. There are vulnerable people in these states who cannot be abandoned.
It’s cathartic to get mad at relatives and friends who aren’t doing the right thing now by getting vaccinated and adhering to public health guidance — and we certainly have the right to set boundaries with these people, particularly if we are vulnerable. But we cannot blame 800,000 deaths on selfish individuals; the blame lies with a government thatWe need free, quality masks; accessible and free rapid tests that people can use daily; and safe workplace and school standards.
