Every year, the festival brings together new and established Indigenous writers to share their work together by the river.

His book is all about the journey Gabriel Dumont and his brother, along with Dogniez’s own great-grandfather, took from Batoche to Round Prairie, travelling along the river. “My story happened right there on the other side of the river,” Dogniez said. “So it was really profound to be able to sit there and say, ‘this is where these events happened.’ I loved it. …

“We were able to sit by the river, with the river flowing behind us.
