Two-Spirit Inuk dancer and artist Keenan Simik Komaksiutiksak will be walking the runways at indfashionarts, hoping to break traditional gender roles and binaries. 'It's the representation and sense of community I wanted to see as a kid.'

Keenan Simik Komaksiutiksak holds an elegant pose in a photoshoot near Bowlby Lake.

"I work in the primarily Eurocentric business as a contemporary dancer and am often the only Inuk and the only Indigenous person in art spaces. It's nice to connect with Indigenous peoples and talk about our cultures. It's a full-circle moment to be around all these beautiful Indigenous artists. It's the representation and sense of community I wanted to see as a kid."

Simik, who lives in Montreal, is a contemporary and improv dancer, choreographer and circus artist who credits their mom for igniting their passion for the arts and dance. Simik recalls playing hockey for a year as a young kid until their mom asked if they wanted to take dance lessons. "In the dance industry, there are these rules of no visible tattoos, don't get face tattoos and whatnot. But as an Inuk, tattooing is a huge part of our culture, especially now with tattoo revitalization. This is another reason I got my tattoos, to show people that you can be a dancer and compete. You can do whatever you want. This is not going to hold you back."
