An analysis showed that last year there were at least 141 threats, protests and violent actions against drag events in 2022, including four in Indiana.

An Indianapolis bookstore briefly closed Sunday after a bomb threat targeted a monthly event featuring drag performers — the latest local example in a nationwide trend in which detractors target drag events., Indy Reads CEO Ruba Marshood said the nonprofit bookstore in Fountain Square had received a bomb threat that mentioned the store's monthly Drag Story Hour. The store closed as a precaution. The post noted all staff members were safe.

"Drag Story Hour, which is typically a person dressed in the artform of drag reading a children’s book with animation and engagement, is designed and intended to teach children that each of us are unique, and there is beauty in that uniqueness," Marshood said. "This is a universal message, and Drag Story Hour is just one tool that parents can use to teach or reinforce this important life lesson. And, if parents aren’t a fan of Drag Story Hour, there are many other tools available to them."On Sunday morning, several Indy Reads employees received emails saying that becuase of the monthly drag story hours, a bomb had been left at their Fountain Square store, according to a post on the Indy Reads Facebook page.
