The Senate's education committee adopted an amendment Wednesday that dramatically guts House Bill 1134, inspired by CRT debates nationwide.
CRT examines systemic racism as a part of American life and institutions and how it can give white people an advantage.A controversial bill aimed at increasing transparency in Indiana’s K-12 classrooms and prohibiting “divisive concepts” about race, gender and religionof its former self after weeks of public outrage and push back from Hoosier educators.
, Marxism and fascism. Sen. Scott Baldwin, R-Noblesville, later walked back those comments but Senate leadership said there was no path forward for the legislation. The new version strips the teeth from the original bill, removing language that would have allowed parents to sue school districts and included a pathway to revoke an educator’s teaching license. It also cut down the list of banned “divisive concepts” from eight tenants to three.
Raatz said he tried to select a representative sample of voices and maintained the balance of commenters in support of and opposed to the bill. He said more than 90% of individuals signed up were there to speak against the bill. Christianne Beebe, a Brownsburg teacher, said it could still have a chilling effect on what teachers say and the materials they use.
Dawn Lang, a Fishers mom of three kids, said she likes the part of the bill that will provide her access to her school's learning management system. She said parents are frustrated and want more transparency in their children's education.
