Indian envoy hopes to see interim trade deal with Canada finalized in 'about a year,' by neilrmoss cdnpoli (unlocked)
Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria, pictured at the Indian High Commission in February 2021, says an interim agreement will be a 'stepping stone' to a more comprehensive Canada-India trade pact. From:India’s envoy to Canada is hoping that an interim trade pact between the two countries can be concluded in “about a year” as Ottawa and Delhi announced earlier this month that they would restart trade talks.
Bisaria said he foresees negotiations on an EPTA taking “about a year,” noting that India was able to finish a trade deal with the United Arab Emirates in a matter of months. While Canada and India have had a few irritants in their bilateral relationship—from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s controversial February 2018 trip to India to the Indian government’s furor over comments made by Canadian cabinet ministers in support of the farmers’ protest—Bisaria said those spats“We are in a situation where the very strong India-Canada economic partnership is leading the political relationship rather than the other way around,” he said.
Trade consultant Eric Miller, president of Rideau Potomac Strategy Group, said the lesson from the previous rounds of discussions is to understand what the two sides can agree to. “Some sort of staged approach with India is something that may be a little more desirable than trying to go to the full negotiation, simply because it’s easier for [India] to digest and it’s easier for Canada to digest and both parties will be in a position where they can claim victory,” he said. “The Indians will want to show their renewed push for trade negotiations are yielding results. Canada would really want to do more with India. … So, I think there’s a positive motivation to do things.
Masse said he is hopeful that the government will be looking at trade with India through the lens of environmental protection and labour rights, but he said he is not willing to compromise on issues that will improve lives for workers and job opportunities for both countries.
