India's richest man passes JeffBezos on list of world's wealthiest people
With a net worth of $152.2 billion as of 5 p.m. EST, Indian billionaire Gautam Adani replaced Bezos in the No. 2 ranking on the Forbes real-time ranking of the world's billionaires. Bezos had a net worth of $146.9 billion by close of business.Adani was later replaced by French business magnate Bernard Arnault, who was worth $154.7 billion by the end of the day, knocking Bezos into fourth, according to the list.
Chairman of multinational conglomerate the Adani Group, Adani's worth skyrocketed this year as energy prices surged. With investments in coal mining, data centers, airports, and renewable energy, the billionaire climbed the Forbes list while important tech titans and other billionaires in the United States slipped.
Adani started the year as No. 14 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, and he became the richest person in Asia in February, surpassing fellow Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, who is No. 8 in the world rankings, according to Forbes. Adani has more than doubled his net worth this year and moved past iconic billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, who is worth $104.6 billion.
Oracle founder Larry Ellison, Buffett, Gates, and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin also make up the top 10 wealthiest people in the world.
