Independent panel to help players with concussion | smhsport
AFL players who suffer lasting effects from concussion can now call upon an independent panel of medical experts to assess their condition under a system that has been introduced by the AFL this season.
The AFL is seeking to have experts from outside the football sphere available to sit on panels to ensure a diversity of opinions consider the circumstances of each case. The experts can then work with the player and determine an appropriate course of action, with the process considered a much more efficient and coordinated approach than previously existed.
It's unclear which players have utilised the panel at this stage, however the AFL expects the process to become common for complicated concussion cases and hopes the process will also lead to greater understanding about what causes some players to suffer more than others after head knocks. The idea for a panel has been on the agenda for a while, but only started operating this season with the protocols based on independent medical examination panels that organisations such as Workcover operate, although the AFL system has been established for treatment purposes rather than for assessing claims.
