Hiding in plain sight in the South Downs, the Leonardslee Estate claims a Michelin-starred restaurant, Interlude, as part of a wonderful ensemble of lakes, gardens, a sculpture park, a Pinotage vineyard, and - curiously - a wallaby enclosure.at the heart of the estate. Decked out in British-designed furnishings, luxurious Mulberry fabrics, and considered collections of art and books, an ethos of more-is-more pays off with aplomb.
Downstairs, the extraordinary 18-course tasting menu at Interlude manages to nail that elusive classic-yet-contemporary approach with just the right level of theatre to an evening of feasting. It’s particularly distinct as it draws on both the influences of South African-born chef Jean Delport and ingredients raised, cultivated, or foraged within the 240-acre estate — from venison and pine to pheasant and mugwort.
Vegetarians are also impressively well-catered for and don’t miss out on the thrill of dining here. The whole experience is elevated by opting for the recommended wine selections; an informed and enthusiastic sommelier presents delicious wines from the estate’s sister vineyard in South Africa.
