Severe temperature increases and heat waves have been associated with a decline in mental health and increased suicidality, according to the report.

Heat-related deaths in those older than 65 increased by almost 70% from 2000-2004 to 2017-2021. Exposure to extremely high temperatures is associated with heat stroke, kidney injury, and worsening of existing heart and lung diseases. Just last December, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an advisory on the youth mental health crisis.
