“Lots of people experience mental illness in different ways, but there’s a difference between having a mental illness and acting out violently,” Tijerina said. “Violence is a behavior and it’s not necessarily behavior that’s consistent with everyone who has a mental illness.” Even as they raise concerns about conflating violence and mental illness, local advocates agree that the recent additional funding for mental health care access is welcome and desperately needed.
