. Almost ten faculty members Tuesday, like the dozen who spoke during a September meeting, asked the board to consider tenure’s long-term value to the institutions and themselves.
But after a brief presentation by ACD Chancellor Mike Flores, trustee Gene Sprague quickly moved to approve it, leading to a short discussion mostly led by trustees who asked for an option for tenure to be further explored. Anna Uriegas Bustamante joined Pulido and Kingsberry in voting against the motion. Gloria Ray was absent.
Under the newly approved plan, 442 current full-time faculty members will be eligible to enter a seven-year track, with single-year contracts followed by two-year rolling contracts starting in the third year. At year six, faculty have the option to enter a review process that could lead to a three-year rolling contract and a $5,000 one-time recognition payment.
Attendees laughed and whispered as Flores presented the plan as an option to provide job security for faculty hired since 2011, when the district did away with tenure track.
