U.S. senators hammered Boeing CEO, Dennis Muilenburg, in a hearing today accusing Boeing of withholding important information from federal authorities and pilots about the flawed flight control system on the 737 MAX that caused 2 deadly crashes

At the outset of his testimony, Muilenburg made an apology to relatives of the 346 deceased who were present at a hearing of the Senate Transportation Committee that was one of his most emotional public moments since the 737 MAX was grounded in March. “On behalf of myself and the Boeing company, we are sorry, we are deeply and truly sorry,” Muilenburg said, his lower lip pulled tight.
Committee chairman Roger Wicker and several other senators expressed dismay over an email exchange between former 737 MAX chief technical pilot Scott Forkner and an FAA official in 2015 in which he joked about “Jedi-mind tricking” regulators worldwide into mandating less pilot training for the forthcoming plane. The messages, Wicker said, “display a disturbing level of casualness and flippancy” that support criticism of an overly close relationship between Boeing and FAA.
Lawmakers and safety experts have questioned whether the system broke down in the case of the 737 MAX, which Boeing was in a hurry to bring to market to counter Airbus’ fast-selling A320neo. An FAA-commissionedthat was conducted by a panel of outside experts found that there may have been undue pressure exerted by Boeing management on engineering staff to ensure certification was completed and that staffing may have been inadequate to the task.
