Finger: In rare air, Jeff Traylor, UTSA try to enjoy the climb
Linebacker Trevor Harmanson contributes an interception return for a touchdown in a victory over UTEP to UTSA’s 10-2 season.Jeff Traylor, for his part, had no problem explaining himself. But as UTSA athletic director Lisa Campos peppered him with questions about one play, and then another, the Roadrunners coach couldn’t help poking a little fun at how he was being subjected to the third degree. That hasn’t happened yet. Perhaps it never will.
Simply put, most college football programs almost never win as much as the Roadrunners have over the past two seasons. Texas hasn’t posted back-to-back 10-victory seasons since 2008-09. Texas A&M hasn’t done it since 1993-94. Houston and SMU, two relatively successful metropolitan programs that UTSA has used as models for what it can become, haven’t done it at all in the past 38 years.
On one hand, winning has become ingrained so completely that the Roadrunners don’t expect anything less. On the other, it happened so quickly that everyone — the school, the fans, the city — might not fully appreciate its significance.
Then there were the widespread, never-ending injuries that obliterated UTSA’s offensive line and meant that victory celebration was tempered by a player crushed by missing out on a season, or being prescribed pain medication, or going under anesthesia for surgery.
