The process to pull the Mars took about five hours as movers manoeuvred the plane through the breakwater and up onto the narrow ramp.
The Hawaii Martin Mars water bomber, fresh from its historic last flight and landing on Sunday, has been pulled out of Patricia Bay in North Saanich and is ready for the next step to its new life as an exhibit at the B.C. Aviation Museum.
“It’s calm with clear skies … the conditions are absolutely perfect,” Nichol said. “But it’s a complicated thing.” The timing was critical for Hawaii Mars because of the high-tide window and prolonged exposure to salt water wouldn’t be good for the plane’s fuselage, said Nichol. After the de-watering process, Nickel Brothers said the company will carefully lift the plane onto a 360-degree movable heavy-haul trailer and tow the water bomber from the bay.
