Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan told military personnel that they must remain 'apolitical'
Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan in two department-wide memos Tuesday told U.S. military personnel to remain apolitical at all times, a reminder that comes after the White House last month asked defense officials to keep the USS John S. McCain “out of sight” ahead of a presidential visit to Japan.
The memos didn’t spell out new Defense Department policy, but were meant to reinforce existing rules and dispel fears that the military was bending to political demands, as some lawmakers and critics have suggested.
