Roberto Pérez, who caught 5 of Giants’ first 7 games, left the 3-1 loss in the 6th inning with a strained throwing shoulder.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants dropped their home opener to the Royals on Friday, 3-1, but the most consequential play for their prospects this season had little impact on the final score.

The Giants announced that Pérez had suffered a right shoulder strain, though they did not specify the severity. He previously missed time in 2020 and 2021 with injuries to the same shoulder. It also represents a tough break for Pérez, who missed most of the past three seasons with various injuries, including a shoulder strain that cost him three weeks in 2020 and inflammation in the same shoulder that sidelined him for six weeks in 2021. After entering spring training as a non-roster invitee, he emerged from a four-man catching competition as the Opening Day starter.

In the meantime, Austin Wynns offers some insurance. Like Sánchez, Wynns would need to be added to the 40-man roster.
