Q&A with musician and filmmaker Rodney DeCroo, who is releasing a new collection of poems and performing June 2 at Vancouver's Backspace

The first book focusses on my early childhood in northern B.C. with my father and mom, when we were with my father still, after the Vietnam War, and on my teenage years in western Pennsylvania, and then when I first arrived in Vancouver on my own, as a teenager. The second book is more similar to this current book in terms of jumping all over the place.

Q: Some of the content is quite harrowing, and you’ve mentioned that writing them is cathartic. How does that work with memory? Do you remember as you write? A: That happens a lot. I think because a lot of my memories are pretty fragmented. Memory is a tricky thing to begin with. Layered over the usual complications of memory is the fact that I was a very active alcoholic and drug addict until my late 20s, early 30s. That, combined with the fact that I have complex PTSD means that I’ve forgotten a lot about my life. When I write about things, stuff just comes back. Like, oh, I forgot all about that moment, or that person, or that exchange.
