The ski resorts in Austria have been quiet, the hiking trails vacant. And that’s invited the return of elk, mountain goats and deer.
Lukas Furtenbach was supposed to be in the Himalayas, leading an expedition up Mount Everest. But in early April, he was on lockdown like everyone else, obeying a government order to quarantine at home in the Austrian Alps, near the popular Ischgl ski resort in Innsbruck.cases had been traced to the resort.
After four weeks of quarantine, authorities allowed residents to carefully venture out April 7 if they followed social distancing guidelines. Hit hard by cabin fever, Furtenbach — a 42-year-old skier, climber and eco-tourism guide — was one of the first to leave his house. He collected his skis and started up a steep slope at the resort, and what he saw at the top stunned him. In this Q&A, Furtenbach explains what he saw.We were going crazy not being able to go out.
