As of Wednesday morning, Tam was in the lead to fill the seat, which represents Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and parts of downtown and East Oakland. Tam had 55.08% of the votes in early returns, compared to Kaplan’s 44.92%.between Fremont Mayor Lily Mei and Hayward City Councilmember Aisha Wahab, who are vying to replace Sen. Bob Wieckowski after he terms out at the end of this year.
With incumbent Assemblymember Bill Quirk retiring at the end of the year, the seat representing about 500,000 people in southern Alameda County was up for grabs. The newly redrawn district covers all of San Leandro, Hayward and Union City, parts of Dublin and Pleasanton, and all of the unincorporated areas of San Lorenzo, Ashland, Cherryland and Castro Valley.
The initial results don’t bode well for Berkeley’s Measure L — a $650 million general obligation bond to raise funding for housing, infrastructure and climate project — which has not yet met the required two-thirds threshold needed to pass. As of Wednesday morning, Branning was leading in District 1, while Chiong was trailing behind former Berryessa Union School District trustee Ben Barrientos.
