Brilliant colt runs fastest speed rating in 18 years in victory
Back in the 1970s, the famed turf writer Andrew Beyer came up with an analytic to determine a thoroughbred’s performance based on the speed of his race and track variant. So, add this to Flightline’s list of impressive numbers from his record, 19¼-length victory in Saturday’s Pacific Classic.
Country Grammer is a very good horse. He finished second earlier this year in the $20 million Saudi Cup then won the $12 million Dubai World Cup as a consolation prize. The total wagering number in 2021 was $36 million, which included $3.5 million wagered on-track. The numbers this year were $27.8 million and $2.9 million on-track. And the attendance was down some 700 fans as the Pacific Classic was run on the Labor Day weekend.
The “win and you’re in” victory returns Lieutenant Dan to the Breeders’ Cup, where he finished second to Golden Pal in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar. “I wanted to ride for someone like Baffert when I came to Del Mar and here I am,” said Vazquez. “I’m happy to be riding this meet for the first time and doing well.”
