Randolph King’s former coworkers at Congressional Cemetery are determined to give him the burial that he watched many others receive.
On the night Marion Barry Jr.’s casket was lowered into the ground at Congressional Cemetery, a group gathered around his grave for a private service. Randolph King didn’t need to be there, but the groundskeeper insisted on staying.
“I think for Mr. King it represented the ultimate service and burial for a Black person,” former president of Congressional Cemetery Paul Williams told me on a recent evening. The page explains: “Family members are unable to raise the funds for a casket burial and funeral home services, which is why we ask you all to donate toward his hefty funeral costs…”Williams, who is now the executive director of Oak Hill Cemetery, said he created the GoFundMe page to give King the funeral he asked for before his death. Williams said King worked for him for a decade, and in that time, the two grew close in a way that went beyond the job.
