Old system needs modernization
Belleville council has taken the first step toward upgrading the city’s sewage treatment plant so it will continue operating even in a power outage for years to come.
At its Monday meeting council approved the most qualified and second lowest bid from Thornhill’s Associated Engineering to evaluate and provide detailed design for a new backup electrical system at the city’s sewage treatment plant. Five companies were considered for the work. The current backup generator is 40 years old and was meant to serve just a small portion of the plant.
And since then a lot of new equipment has been installed increasing the demand for power across the board. The engineering work will lead to the eventual tendering and development of a new backup power system to keep all of the plant running, even in the dark.
