Federal officials agreed to boost efforts aimed at reducing cross-border pollution, such as maintaining an earthen berm in the Tijuana River's concrete channel during dry weather
A lawsuit over Tijuana sewage spills spearheaded by Imperial Beach nearly five years ago has ended, eliciting a pledge by federal officials to ramp up reporting and other efforts to address theThe settlement agreement was finalized this week in federal court between the U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission, or IBWC, and the plaintiffs Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego.
Working with counterparts in Mexico to maintain an earthen berm in the main channel of the Tijuana River during the dry season. The idea is to prevent trash and sewage-laden water from spilling over the border when it’s not raining. The agency is also pursuing efforts to create a second berm in the channel north of the border.
Document trash build-ups in and around the canyons, relaying information to Border Patrol agents working in the area, as well as The Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Tijuana, or CESPT, which operates the city’s sewer and water delivery system. “It’s overall increased inspections, response, reporting,” she said. “Those are the themes of the requirements under the settlement agreement.”
“Our lawsuit was the key that finally unlocked all of the action we are now beginning to see, actions that will help protect public health, our economy, and our environment,” Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre said in a statement. “There is a lot of work ahead of us still, but our regional partnership is stronger than ever.”
