Vancouver Police Department, East Vancouver, Nursing Home Crash

A 34-year-old impaired driver was arrested after a pickup truck crashed into a nursing home in East Vancouver, split in half and caught fire early Friday morning.

A 34-year-old impaired man was arrested early Friday morning after crashing a pickup truck into a nursing home in East Vancouver, according to police. The vehicle split in half and burst into flames upon impact, police said. The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) responded to the incident at approximately 1:30 a.m. near Renfrew Street and East 22nd Avenue.

Collision Details and Witness Account

Police said a witness reported that a grey GMC Sierra was travelling south on Renfrew Street when it collided with his vehicle near East 22nd Avenue. The truck then veered off the roadway and collided with the building, which Google Maps pinpoints as the Three Links Care Centre at the southeast corner of the intersection.

Responding officers located the vehicle wreckage fully engulfed in flames, the VPD said in a statement. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to split in half.

Injuries and Arrests

No injuries were reported by occupants of the impacted building or the witness, according to police. The truck driver and his passenger were transported to hospital. The driver was later arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The driver will soon appear in court, and police said he was served a 90-day driving prohibition.

Investigation and Public Appeal

The VPD said it seized what was left of the truck as part of its investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the department’s Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012 or email vpdciu@vpd.ca.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. The name of the driver has not been released pending charges.
