Tara Subkoff deserves a round of applause. For decades she’s been provoking and artfully upending the fashion system materially and ideologically. Recognizing the industry as a circus, she’s taken a clear-eyed look at a world that sometimes resembles the contorted reflections of a funhouse mirror. Spring 2022, said Subkoff “is an ode to the society of the spectacle, situationism, and protesting in a creative and positive way that makes noise, that people pay attention to.
These appeared in the first “act” of a three-part performance piece Subkoff orchestrated at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery. Selected guests were taken out of their seats and invited outside to see the garments presented on dancers, who performed to live music with moves set by ballerinas-turned choreographers Alicia Fotino and Isabelle Selier, who are known as Dead Serious NYC.
Subkoff has worked with rotating teams of young talents for several seasons now. In so doing she not only breaks with fashion’s star system but also very actively shares her platform and creates opportunities for a new generation.
