Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov participated in a full practice for the first time since he was forced to miss games due to a knee injury. Samsonov expressed excitement about returning to the ice, stating, 'Just taking it day by day right now. Kind of sucks, obviously, not playing. And we were playing pretty well when I went down. So, just to be able to get back out there, be able to practice with the guys again, be around the group, it's been a lot of fun so far.
'\Craig Berube, Toronto's head coach, shared a positive outlook on Samsonov's progress, saying, 'He's been very positive about everything. He's been in a good frame of mind with it all. The knee is feeling good so the key for Stolarz right now is improving his conditioning and getting back into game shape.' Samsonov acknowledged the unique challenges of regaining his form as a goalie, emphasizing the importance of timing, screens, traffic, and reading plays. He mentioned working with Curtis McElhinney before and after practice to get back up to speed.\Samsonov's injury occurred in early December, requiring a procedure to remove a loose piece of cartilage or bone behind his knee. He initially anticipated a four to six-week recovery period. When he sustained the injury, he was in the middle of a career-best season with a .927 save percentage in 17 games, leading the NHL. His teammates, like Mitch Marner and Chris Tanev, expressed their support and confidence in his ability to return quickly and make a significant contribution to the team. Marner highlighted Samsonov's calmness on the ice, defensive abilities, and willingness to face the toughest opponents. Tanev recognized Samsonov's experience and hard work, emphasizing his importance to the team's success. The Leafs are hopeful that Samsonov will be ready to return to action before the break begins on February 8th
