In most provinces, rental cars often aren’t equipped with winter tires

While all rental cars must have winter tires in Quebec – where winter tires are mandatory from Dec. 1 to March 15 – that’s not true of other provinces. My family is originally from Saskatchewan, but I grew up in Southern California. I’m flying up there to see some cousins for the holidays and I’ll be renting a car and driving to some smaller towns. I’ve never driven there in the winter.

We asked several rental companies exactly what percentage of their cars have winter tires and didn’t get answers. “The industry typically responds to customer demands,” Craig Hirota, vice-president of government relations and member services for Associated Canadian Car Rental Operators , a Milton, Ont.-based industry group, said in an e-mail. “So locations closer to Quebec or in northern regions with ample snow and ice typically have larger proportions of their fleet outfitted with winter tires.”

If the website doesn’t show an available car with winter tires, call the specific branch where you’ll be picking up the car and see whether they still might have one, an Enterprise spokesman said in an e-mail.“Vehicles in our fleet in colder climates are equipped with snow brushes and/or ice scraper and winter-grade windshield washer fluid,” Hertz’s Line said. Also, make sure you and passengers are dressed for winter weather – or have winter gear packed in the car – before driving.

“If you’re ever stuck in an emergency on the road, you’ll be able to run your car for short periods of time to stay warm,” D’Arbelles said. “ keeping your tank at least half full reduces the build-up of condensation, which can freeze and stop fuel from reaching your engine.”“Your AC is also a dehumidifier – use it to clear foggy windows for better visibility,” she said.

When you’re driving, slow down – even the speed limit may be too fast on snowy or icy roads – and keep extra distance from the car in front of you, D’Arbelles said.
