There she would meet John James Dunn Oland. A man a year younger and also from Somerset. He didn’t come from a whole lot either. The two married in 1842.They clawed their way out of debt when John switched from distribution for breweries with a side hustle as a tobacconist to being an accountant for the railways. Bankruptcy quickly faded into memory.
John lost his job at the railway. Twenty years after the bankruptcy, they were living on a farm. But this time they weren’t in their twenties. And they had seven kids. A local military man, also destined to become a well-to-do, Francis Walter de Winton became friendly with John. When visiting, Francis tried Susannah’s ale. He was impressed and endorsed her to continue in larger amounts.Francis and John saw the opportunity. Together with other investors, they established Turtle Grove Brewery in 1867. It would quickly climb to the third most popular beer in Halifax.Susannah managed Turtle Grove Brewery. She manufactured the ale.
