The Concorde, an aviation game-changer and pioneer of supersonic travel, completed a unique journey floating across New York's Hudson River.
Michael M. Santiago / Getty ImagesAfter supersonic flights ceased in 2003, the decommissioned British Airways aircraft—one of the 20 ever to be in service—was kept in storage at the Intrepid Museum in Manhattan until being removed in August for restoration.
Early morning the next day, it began its journey up the Hudson River, passing the Statue of Liberty on its route to Pier 86 on the West Side of Manhattan. A large 500-ton crane raised the aircraft back into position on the Intrepid, and the journey took almost three hours. The aircraft, registration number G-BOAD, made its airborne debut in 1976 and was formerly part of a combined service run by Singapore Airlines andof cruising at a maximum speed of 1,354 mph . The flights ranged from three and a half to four hours. Large modern airplanes may reach up to 600 mph , and an average trip from London to New York takes eight hours.
