KINGSTON—More than 40 years after his death, and almost 70 years since he beat the odds and became prime minister, John Diefenbaker has finally found a champion. His name is John Ibbitson and his just-released volume, The Duel: Diefenbaker, Pearson, and the Making of Modern Canada, gives the 13th prime minister a fair shake after decades where the positive aspects of Diefenbaker’s legacy were ignored, downplayed and dismissed by many historians.
” As an example, Ibbitson cites to great effect the place of women in Canadian society, and the work of Pearson and his team in improving their situation. Today, the 14th prime minister’s role is often overlooked. “He ,” Ibbitson writes, “went from seeing no reason to have two women in cabinet…. To appointing the Royal Commission on the Status of Women.
