Judge: ‘This was conduct richly deserving of rebuke.’
The B.C. Supreme Court has made extraordinary awards — $100,000 a month in spousal support, $579,000 in child support and special costs — in an international divorce involving an ultra-wealthy Singapore couple.
“Taking everything into account, I conclude that a fair award of spousal support in this period is $100,000 per month,” Gomery concluded. “This should suffice to cover the debt servicing charges, expenses of property ownership, and taxes, with an amount left over for Ms. Devathasan to spend on herself that is roughly equivalent to what Dr. Devathasan has been spending on himself.”
They maintained large homes, a ski chalet at Big White, an apartment in the Hotel Georgia, and investment properties in B.C., Ontario, Florida, Thailand and Malaysia. In Singapore, Dr. Devathasan owned a $200,000 Maserati Gran Cabrio and a $145,000 Audi 8L. At her $6.2-million West Vancouver home, Ms. Devathasan had a US$250,000 Rolls-Royce Ghost sedan, a $150,000 2015 Range Rover and a $160,000 2015 Audi RS7 Quattro. Dr. Devathasan had $2 million in Singapore cash in a safe.
Dr. Devathasan was born in Singapore and qualified as a neurologist in the United Kingdom. He returned to Singapore and eventually went into private practice. In early 1987, Ms. Devathasan became pregnant with Dr. Devathasan’s child, a son identified only as ‘D’ born in September 1987, who is now a professional engineer.
