Opinion: Liberals use of legislative club approved as NDP helps pass motion required to confirm triggering of emergency legislation

Faced with the same existential threat — snarled downtown traffic — New Zealand wielded not so much a Big Stick as big speakers — blasting its annoying protesters with Disney music, Barry Manilow and the like: REALLY LOUD SHMALTZ.

The Liberals scoffed — dismissing the claims that anyone other than the convoy’s leaders and major backers were targeted and asking, weren’t the Tories once the law and order party. “Let’s be clear: there is no legal justification for using the Emergencies Act. The broad powers the government has granted to police curtail Charter rights across the country. The risk of abuse is high. The emergency declaration should be immediately revoked.”

Toronto Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith agreed he considered voting against confirmation now that border blockades and similar urban disruptions elsewhere have ended, but he had no interest in sparking an election. In the past month, Trudeau’s political savvy has been battered black-and-blue and nothing has done more damage than invoking this law on what appears to be scant evidence.

The situation in the capital was a boil that needed lancing, not a gangrenous arm requiring amputation.
