I've outgrown my days of being a fanatic member of Beyonce's Beyhive. ✍️ I’m probably still on the over-the-top side of things to the average person, but my days of losing sleep over the Renaissance singer are firmly behind me. 🔵 kubared
? I genuinely squealed the first time I saw it.) I’ve stayed up until the early hours to watch her Super Bowl performances; welled up with excitement the first time I noticed her stepping into her wonderfully cocky phase, telling the world toShamefully, when the group chat reported her self-titled album had been released in 2013, I scrambled to download it on my iPad while on a train to a funeral, lapping up the visual album on the walk to the church, and again from the gravesite .
It was absolutely ridiculous behaviour. It was gloriously fun too. Through studying her career, raking through “Beyonce’s shadiest moments” compilations on YouTube, even learning her family tree, I learned what it meant to truly love and identify with the artist – and to defend her fiercely too. If your level of fandom looks anything like mine did back then , you’ll know the sting of hearing the misinformed spout nonsense about her “not really being able to sing”, or releasing music with “no substance”, or not being a “real artist”. I suppose the difference now is that, rather than taking delight in the Beyhive swarming anyone with a remotely bad word to say about her online, I find it a little embarrassing.Even Beyonce herself doesn’t seem to be a fan of such behaviour.
That said, we’re not all bad, us Beyonce fans, especially those of us who no longer have the time that adolescence brings to dedicate every waking moment to immersing ourselves all things Giselle Knowles-Carter. I may no longer have the energy to sit transfixed for hours as her iconic roster of music videos and songs wash over me, but I have found new, less impractical ways of appreciating her that don’t compromise my sleep.
Don’t get me wrong, to the average indifferent Beyonce fan, I’m probably still on the over-the-top side of things. I’ll still assemble a call-centre-style team to secure tickets to her next tour as usual; I’ll still delight in forcing her releases on my extremely uninterested parents. But when it comes to losing sleep, or the feeling in my toes as a result of being a little too enthusiastic, I’m glad to say those days are firmly behind me.
