Other challenges include difficulty recognizing letters and sounds, which can impact decoding or sounding out words, spelling words correctly and getting thoughts on paper, and struggling with reading fluency. While Grandbois suffered through a lack of assisted technology or special focus like a dedicated room to write tests or have a scribe, and was largely left to her own devices, her son has had some wonderful teachers along the way who did some things right.
"Like most learning disorders, dyscalculia is a neurological condition, and it makes even simple maths like 2+2=4 seem confusing to me." Families are put on long waitlists if they want to go through the publicly-funded school diagnosis program or have to pay for the expensive private assessments option.
“Most of the calls and emails we get are around how to disclose being dyslexic to your employer," says Brown. “Workplace accommodations are usually not costly and can make a big difference to the employee’s ability to keep up with the demands of their job," said ADAPT project manager Kevin Landry. “It is also important that the intervention and support for students continue into upper elementary school, middle school, and high school," Congdon said.
