The hosts, locations, and guests change every year, but here’s the gist of the late-night lineup: One party is usually hosted by a well-funded corporate sponsor, and has the best cocktails and decor by far. Another is thrown by an impossibly chic co-chair with impossibly chic taste where, if you are lucky enough to get an invite, you spend the entire evening praying that you, too, can be this chic.
At around 11 p.m., the ballgowns off and sultrier looks slapped on, celebrities and their posses of managers, press people, stylists, and general hangers-on pile into sprinter vans and go out until the wee hours. It's a wild, FOMO-filled gauntlet, where you're always trying to figure out where to go, what to wear, andAnd on Monday night, this writer threw on a shimmery short Carolina Herrera dress and attempted to party hop along with them.Party One: Instagram at the James B.
It’s midnight and the room is filling up, but I’ve still got a lot more parties to hit. I walk out the entrance only to realize I’ve landed right in the middle of someone’s street style photoshoot—“I’m sorry!” I yell while running to my Uber. A quick look back tells me they’re visibly annoyed.Do you need me to tell you that the Tom Ford party was good? Because, like everything Tom Ford does, it was.
The elevator opens and there’s Cardi B, as advertised, rapping on top of the bar. Half of the enraptured crowd has their cellphones out to film. The other half is too busy dancing, champagne in hand. At first I think it’s a set, a small performance—she’s hosting the evening along with Playboy—but then I realize Cardi is just, well,, dancing and lip syncing along to the music because she’s in a partying mood.
