“At dinner, the Queen told me of her affection for John F. Kennedy’s mother, Rose, because when she and Margaret were young, a relative died, and the two girls were banished to a small room when important guests called. Only Rose Kennedy came into the room and chatted with them. They were ignored by the other guests — and she remembered it, some forty years later! One shouldn’t really cross the Queen, I concluded.

“At the Commonwealth Meeting in London, the other leaders and I dined at Buckingham Palace with Her Majesty the Queen. As only politicians can, we discussed among ourselves the role of media in our home countries and agreed how difficult the press could be … the Queen contributed this comment: ‘Any objective observer would say that Prime Minister Mulroney has the most difficult time of all,’ she said quietly. This comes from the autobiography of Richard Rohmer, one of Canada’s most decorated citizens and the fighter pilot who in 1944 was responsible for calling in a successful airstrike on German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. In the passage above he’s describing a 1975 encounter in which he arranged the delivery of an ambulance to the people of Tortola on the British Virgin Islands.

“My protocol office had warned me off jokes, telling me these would not be appreciated by the royals. Nonetheless, at my last event with the queen, I addressed our audience by saying, ‘I have spent the past three days with Her Majesty and I cannot get over the size of the crowds I have been drawing.’ I was a bit disappointed when the queen failed to react to my humour. But later, when we were walking together, she quietly acknowledged my effort: ‘That was a good joke.
