Kennedy’s mother, Rose, because when she and Margaret were young, a relative died, and the two girls were banished to a small room when important guests called. Only Rose Kennedy came into the room and chatted with them. They were ignored by the other guests — and she remembered it, some forty years later! One shouldn’t really cross the Queen, I concluded.

This comes from the autobiography of Richard Rohmer, one of Canada’s most decorated citizens and the fighter pilot who in 1944 was responsible for calling in a successful airstrike on German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. In the passage above he’s describing a 1975 encounter in which he arranged the delivery of an ambulance to the people of Tortola on the British Virgin Islands.

Nonetheless, at my last event with the queen, I addressed our audience by saying, ‘I have spent the past three days with Her Majesty and I cannot get over the size of the crowds I have been drawing.’ I was a bit disappointed when the queen failed to react to my humour. But later, when we were walking together, she quietly acknowledged my effort: ‘That was a good joke.
