Midway through my shopping, a man leaned in to make a joke about necessities over a basket of gloriously discounted wine. After weeks in the house, I loved the casual friendliness. Then I immediately felt guilty for not having stepped back and chanced rudeness in order to better distance myself. A week and a half later, I had to go back to the store. Now the aisles were one-way, though nobody seemed to quite understand how to make that work, and I didn’t see anyone correct anyone else. Some of the cashiers wore masks; many didn’t. My face covering was too tight, so I was intermittently gasping for air as I walked through the aisles. I felt silly, stupid.
