When on a work retreat , don't stay in your room. Join in with the activities and connect with new people.

Question: I’m going on a work retreat – the first that my company has hosted since the pandemic. I’ll be with many people I’ve never met in person. How can I make the most of it?In a remote and hybrid world, we see that people are just as productive, maybe even more productive than before. But I think face-to-face interactions are still critical for building trust and giving us the opportunity to talk personally with each other.

If there is somebody that you’ve been wanting to connect with, make a plan to meet with them. Say, ‘I’d love to have a coffee with you,’ or at least plant those seeds, because time goes by quickly once you are there.I think it’s natural to be a bit nervous to interact with your colleagues and your boss at a retreat, especially people you have never met in person. But try to be open and curious. Don’t stay in your room, join in with activities knowing that everyone else is probably nervous too.

“Having a C-suite level executive whose sole purpose within the company is to ensure mental health stays top of mind provides an extra layer of assurance and assistance that many organizations have yet to adopt,” says Olivia Cicchini, an HR and employment law specialist with Peninsula Canada.

“To kick off a big project, outline what’s on the plate. What do we have to get done as a team? How are we going to ensure we’ve got the right resources applied to the right projects? Make sure you are fostering an environment where you listen to different perspectives and encourage everyone to contribute, so people feel heard and are motivated.
