Henry VI quarter noble believed to be oldest English coin found in Canada

This gold coin found on Newfoundland’s south coast may be oldest English coin found in Canada. - ContributedST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Among many metal detectorists, finding ancient gold is considered the top goal, the ultimate success within a hobby that often does turn up treasure, but more than enough old nails and pop can tabs along the way.

“It was so bright yellow and really thin, and I wasn't thinking it was a gold coin. I was thinking it was almost like a tag from something or a button, or something like that,” Hynes told SaltWire Network.“I knew it was something cool. It looked interesting to me, but of course I know nothing of English medieval coins. It's not something that I have looked into before and I knew nothing of hammered coins.

Hynes said he never had thoughtsof selling the coin, and first called a local museum to ask for advice on what to do with it. They suggested he call The Rooms. Searching online for contact information, Hynes discovered he was legally obligated under the Historic Resources Act to report his find to the provincial government.

It’s a mystery how the coin made it here, but Berry believes the coin was likely not in circulation when it was lost, a government news release stated Nov. 9. Hynes discovered the coin not far from a known but undisclosed archeological site. “These types of artifacts help us understand and appreciate the history of our province, and provide context for those who visit Newfoundland and Labrador from around the world,” Crocker said.
