Although, Ministry of Health has said in the past that any Indigenous person can have their traditional name written on their identification, the fight to do this is not over for one Indigenous Māori man in Victoria.

Pāora is getting frustrated about the way his new Indigenous Māori name is being handled by BC Vital Statistics. He’s been a Canadian citizen since 1997. As part of his personal decolonization process, he flew back to his home country of New Zealand earlier this year where he easily changed his name to a chosen traditional Maori name.He then came back to Canada to start the same process but ran into a problem registering his new name.

Back in 2022, then Health Minister Adrian Dix said moving forward, all Indigenous people we be able to claim their traditional names. BC Vital Statistics has previously said its committed to the revitalization of Indigenous languages in B.C.
