Corbin Martin is healthy and likes the way he is pitching, but he is most encouraged about where he is from a mental standpoint.

Corbin Martin’s arm feels healthy, his mechanics are sound and for the first time in years he was able to enjoy a normal offseason to prepare. But there is another, perhaps more important, reason for optimism as he enters his third full season with the Diamondbacks.

Martin is a 26-year-old right-hander. The Diamondbacks acquired him in July 2019 as the centerpiece of the Zack Greinke trade with the Houston Astros. Just when he was about to return from elbow surgery, he suffered an oblique strain that wiped out his 2020 season. Then came last year. In five starts with the Diamondbacks, Martin was. He gave up 19 runs in 16 innings. He issued 14 walks, served up five home runs.“I mentally didn’t feel scared to throw the ball,” Martin said, “but it looked like I was scared to attack guys.”

He traces his shift in perspective to two things. First, there was the birth of his son, Braxton, in October 2020. The more time he spent around his wife, Alyssa, and their child, the more he realized what mattered in life. “I realized it’s not showing a weak side,” he said. “I feel like when we started talking I was able to get everything out. Every day I’m talking to my wife, my family, friends and Zach Brandon, and we were able to get everything out that I was frustrated with.
