'I just want to stop other people from wasting their lives like I wasted mine. I just believe in progress and not perfection because that’s the best shot we have.'
In this op-ed, Gianluca Russo explores why Jameela Jamil, a thin woman, headlined The Curvy Con — and why that might be OK.
, a three day body positive fashion event in New York City created by and for fat people. It seemed like a strange choice to have her as a leading speaker at the event when she is, in fact, thin and conventionally attractive. Jamil is an ally to body positivity, not a spokesperson, so why was she a keynote speaker for The CurvyCon?
Most reservations regarding Jamil’s attendance at The CurvyCon revolved around the event’s mission: To uplift plus-size and fat voices. But as Olisa explained to“As a black person, I'm very clear that I cannot fix racism,” Olisa said backstage before her interview with Jamil. “I need non-black people, non-people of color, white people to step up and help me to feel safer as an American. The same thing applies with the plus. Plus-size women are not the decision makers.
point is valid: If she walks away, the growing mainstream conversation around these crucial topics may diminish. After all, Jamil is doing everything a good ally should be doing.
