‘I’d keep one eye open when it comes to the Liberals,’ says former NDP MP via thehilltimes
Let's do this: NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau does not deliver on the promises in the confidence and supply agreement, his party will pull out. Former NDP MPs say their MPs and the leader will keep a close eye to ensure the Liberals fulfill their commitments in the agreement.
For a fourth place party in the Parliament, the confidence and supply agreement is a good opportunity to make itself relevant, says former Ontario NDP MP Malcolm Allen.Allen made the comments in response to some pundits who have said that the Liberals are the senior partners in this agreement and will reap all the political advantages of this deal in the next election.
“The government gets to present the checks and cut the ribbons, don’t they?” Allen said. “And they don’t always invite you. So, you always struggle to try to get yourself in that frame. In this case, with this agreement, it is some good news there for Canadians. So we’re going to have to continue to make sure that we fight to be noticed.
Singh has said in media interviews that if the Liberals do not back up their words with action, the NDP can pull out of this agreement. He has also said that his party will keep a close eye to ensure the Liberals keep their promises. “Canadians need to know, in these very cynical times, that there is hope, and that government doesn’t control you, you control government,” said Hardcastle.
A Liberal MP interviewed for this article predicted that from a strategic standpoint, the agreement would help the fourth-place party in Parliament in ridings that are Liberal-NDP competitive. They argued that in the next election, voters would say: why not vote for the party that made the government deliver on its promises.
