Making an effort for him was one of those things I felt like I had to do as a teenager and young adult – not because it’s what I actually really wanted, but because I thought that’s what a real, emotionally mature grown-up would do. When I was small, I’d jump at the chance to hear his voice on the phone. But I haven’t seen him since the one and only time he visited when I was six.
