Upon taking the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II inherited millions of subjects around the world, many of them unwilling. Today, in the British Empire's former colonies, her death brings complicated feelings, including anger.
"Most of our grandparents were oppressed," Mugo tweeted hours after the queen's death Thursday."I cannot mourn." Amos Ndegwa, a naturalist and tour guide, lights a candle to pay tribute in the lounge of the Treetops Hotel, where Britain's Queen Elizabeth II spent her last night as a princess, but which closed down due to a drop in tourist numbers during the coronavirus pandemic, in the Aberdare National Park, in Kenya Friday, Sept. 9, 2022.
Yiannis Spanos, president of the Association of National Organization of Cypriot Fighters, said the queen was"held by many as bearing responsibility" for the island's tragedies.India is renewing its efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove colonial names and symbols.
