Today, roughly 280 of Canada’s 338 members of Parliament participated in the country’s first virtual meeting of its kind. The three-hour event was intended to give all MPs a chance to question the Liberal government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic
in Washington, even though the House abruptly dropped a plan Tuesday to have all lawmakers return next week.
Tuesday’s virtual meeting was the first of what is to become a twice-weekly stand-in for regular proceedings of Canada’s Parliament. A skeleton crew of Canadian parliamentarians will attend in-person meetings in Ottawa on Wednesdays, and can debate and pass legislation in the House of Commons as needed. A committee is currently studying how the work of Parliament should proceed during the pandemic, but remote voting is not presently allowed.
